Editorial: Two things will make Amarillo’s bulky pick-up program work

City of Amarillo cannot make it much easier.

Amarillo has a “bulky item pick-up” program that should work fine, provided two things happen — residents remember to call the city and the city responds in a timely fashion.

Here are the details:

Items too large for a dumpster can be placed in front of the curb. For example, furniture and mattresses.

The city will come by and pick up discarded items too big for the dumpster — that is if citizens call the city and provide the necessary information.

Assuming the city is notified, the Solid Waste Collection department will come by within 24 hours and pick up the large discarded items, “depending on normal working times and days.”

Sounds great, and there is little reason to think this process will not prove beneficial.

As Amarillo residents can attest, there are far too many people who simply discard of unwanted items in alleyways, sometimes completely missing the dumpster. In many such cases, large items such as mattresses and used appliances are left sitting in alleyways near dumpsters. This is not only a health hazard as far as creating a haven for rodents and vermin, but it is also a public safety hazard for those attempting to drive through alleyways.

Fortunately, the city has made it simple for residents — just put items such as large toys, hot water heaters, fencing (even hot tubs) no more than three feet from the curb or near a sidewalk. And the city will come dispose of these items.

Not to be pessimistic, but a worst-case scenario would be residents piling up discarded items like mattresses in their front yards, and not calling the city to come pick them up. It would not be good to have front yards resembling what some alleyways look like within the city.

However, judgment should be reserved. Many alleyways in the city resemble a junkyard thanks to residents who just dump their unwanted possessions near a dumpster.

As long as the process works — meaning citizens let the city know there is what amounts to a large amount of debris on a curb which needs to be picked up, and the city responds promptly — the city’s alleyways will be clear.
