Randall High School senior

Our Band Member Spotlight nominee this week is 17-year-old Randall High School senior and Drum Major Emily Boschen. Randall High School Director of Bands Ginger Denney nominated this outstanding band student for her many accomplishments.

“Emily Boschen is one of the Randall High School Drum Majors and has been first chair flute for three years,” Denney said. “She has qualified for All Region and Area three years in a row and qualifies as a Texas 6A All-State flutist in 2016-2017. Emily has earned a first division on her solo at UIL solo and ensemble all 3 years and was selected as an Outstanding Soloist at the State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin in 2016.”

During the West Texas A&M Band Camp in July, Boschen reported that she was chosen as a soloist the first week of the two-week camp. This distinction enabled her to play a concerto with the High School Honor Band.

Boschen said she has lived in Amarillo her entire life and has “grown up with music around me.” She also said that her mom “has always played piano.”

“My teachers have really inspired me and I would like to keep that going and inspire others,” she said.

Her future plans include majoring in Music Education in college and eventually becoming either a middle school or high school band director.

When asked her secret to success in music, Boschen said, “I practice a lot, I do what I’m told, and I’m a rule follower.” She said that when her teacher told her to practice every day, she paid attention.

“Practice makes perfect,” she said. “That’s kind of my motto.”

Emily’s parents are Dan and Angela Boschen, and Angela echoed Emily’s sentiments. “I’ve never had to tell her to practice,” Angela said. “I’ve decided she truly enjoys it.”

Angela currently plays piano in church but her experiences as a high school flute player inspired her daughter to also choose playing the flute in band beginning in the sixth grade.

Outside of music, Emily said that her other main hobby is sewing. She has been a member of Randall County 4-H since fifth grade and enters her sewing in competitions. She also enjoys reading, arts and crafts.
