The annual Geranium Fundraiser is in full swing, Susie Akers, executive director, says this is the only fundraiser the organization has.
Beautiful and healthy geraniums from Irwin’s Greenhouse are on sale for $9.50 for six-inch potted plants and $18 for 10-inch hanging baskets. The prices are the same as last year and there are a variety of colors to choose from, according to Akers.
Online orders can be placed online at www.amarillomealsonwheels.org and orders will be taken through April 6.
Akers said that the plants make excellent Mother’s Day gifts and can be picked up Saturday, May 12, right before Mother’s Day.
All of the donations from the geranium sale stay in the community and help people, scholarship clients, who can’t pay for their meals Akers said.
Some clients can and do pay $2.25 per meal, and it takes $50 to fund meals for one month for a homebound senior who can’t afford to pay, according to Akers.
“We never deny services if they can’t afford it. No questions asked.” Akers said.
Meals on Wheels has never accepted any government money or funding, she said.
“We rely completely on the generosity of our community,” Akers said.
Meals on Wheels, located at 219 SW 7th Street, paid cash for a lot off of Coulter Street and Outlook Drive and is looking to move. Meals on Wheels is asking for assistance in raising money for it new office building to be constructed in their future location, Akers said.
