Jarrett Johnston and Casey Weiss shot a bogey free round of 6-under 65 Saturday in the final round of the Amarillo Country Club Whing Ding low-ball partnership Saturday afternoon to win the event by seven shots.

Johnston now has won this event three straight times while Weiss became a winner of the tournament for the fourth time, with his second partners (he previously won three times with Keith Bjork).

Johnston, who won this tournament the previous two years with Will Doughtie, earns a berth in the 2017 Coors Tournament of Champions. Weiss already had qualified for that tournament by virtue of winning the Miller Lite Open three weeks earlier.

They began the final round with a three-shot lead and were never really threatened en route to winning.

Their final round of 65 gave them a 54-hole total of 18-under 195. The team of Luke Kane and Tate Allred finished in second place at 11-under 202 after a final round of 3-under 68.

Tom Doughtie and Drew Baccus were solo third at 9-under 204 following their final round of even-par 71.

Johnston and Weiss played their front nine in 3-under with birdies at 2, 7 and 9 to increase their lead to five shots heading to the final nine holes.

Over those final nine holes they made birdies at 10, 16 and 18 to complete the wire-to-wire triumph in this the first of four summer major partnership events.

If there was a deciding factor in their win, it might have dated to Thursday’s opening round.

”We played our final three holes on Thursday in 4-under with two birdies and an eagle,” said Johnston. ”That span of holes gave us a three-shot lead after the round and we never were out of it afterward.

”We only made two bogeys over the three rounds, and they came Friday morning. We felt going out in the final round if we could make some birdies, and stay away from any bogeys we would be fine.”

Johnston becomes the fifth qualifier for this year’s T of C, joining Weiss, Kyle Kelting, Daniel Higgins and Geoff Phemister.

The next summer major of tap will be the Tall Tower Open, presented by Happy State Bank. That tournament will begin with the championship flight playing an 18-hole round Friday at the Ross Rogers Mustang layout, followed by rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
