For the second straight year Kyle and Derick Kelting will meet a Borger team in the finals of the 66th Budweiser Partnership.
But, unlike last year when they edged the team of Bobby Barber and Michael Casey at the 36th and final hole, they will meet the much-younger team of Dylan Coffer and Will Paulsell at the Ross Rogers Mustang layout beginning at 8:30 this morning.
The Keltings earned their second consecutive finals berth in this event by edging the team of Brayden Cruth and Jeff Henderson 1-up in one of four Saturday morning quarterfinal matches in this low-ball, low-total format event.
They turned right around for their afternoon semifinal match whey they started fast and finished stronger in a 9&8 win over the team of Kent Neal-Max Shaw.
Coffer and Paulsell earned their finals berth thanks to a 4&2 morning quarterfinal win over Barber and Casey, then outlasted the team of Braxton Sides-Michael Hodson 4-up in the afternoon semifinal to set up today’s finale.
The Keltings will try to become the fourth team since Luke Kane and Jud Hightower in 2007 and 2008 to win this tournament back-to-back. The others have been Josh McCoy and Zack Norrell in 2011 and 2012 and Logan Leggett-Brad Borden in 2013 and 2014.
Kyle Kelting, who will turn 55 years old this summer, became the oldest person ever to win this tournament last year and he and Derick became just the second father-son team to win it. Tom and Will Doughtie won it in 2004, but were not able to win a second time, so the Keltings can make further history if they are to accomplish that feat today.
And, they nearly didn’t have that opportunity.
In their quarterfinal match against Cruth and Henderson, both of those players had birdie putts at the 18th hole but failed to convert and the Keltings held on after going to that final hole with the lead.
”Brayden and I needed to convert either of our birdie chances to force extra holes,” said Henderson who now lives in the Dallas area, after living much of his life in the Panhandle.
Today’s winning team can earn a berth in the Coors Tournament of Champions in August. Of the four players involved in today’s 36-hole final only Kyle Kelting has qualified for the T of C, thanks to his win in the event last summer.
Coffer and Paulsell played in last year’s T of C thanks to a win in the Coors Partnership at Comanche Trail.
