Letter: Gender transition surgery is more than cosmetic surgery

Regarding a recent letter to the editor in Amarillo Globe-News (Letter: Cosmetic surgery vs. ‘gender transition surgery’, Dec. 8, amarillo.com), I could perceive that in Afghanistan a soldier might need cosmetic surgery for the growing of a beard in order to engage relationships with the natives and garner intelligence.

Yet, gender transition has many other issues.

As a soldier, the altering of a given physical anatomy is the least problematic to fitness. Military medicine must consider that injecting hormones and foreign substances required post-surgery alters a brain which is still under development until the age of 24. This impacts a soldier’s fitness to make decisions for life. Last but not least is the documented 41 percent post-surgery suicide rate.

If stupidity is defined as doing something in which the known outcome is going to be deleterious, false or negative, then stupid is as stupid does — as stated in the movie “Forrest Gump.” Director Robert Zemeckis had Mr. Gump avoid decisions in which the character’s limited intellect could result in a negative outcome.

So, while everyone around Mr. Gump with higher intellect made decisions about lifestyle drugs etc., he avoided those and experienced life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We have a lot of stupid people and some of them are congressmen, major media reporters, Heisman Trophy winners or those who compare gender transition to mere cosmetics.
