A group of local self-described “concerned” residents have formed a new grassroots political action committee for the upcoming May municipal elections, according to a news release distributed Monday night.
Calling themselves Amarillo Matters, the group has the backing of more than 110 residents and says it is committed to “electing quality leaders; Leaders with impeccable character, a professional demeanor and who are focused on the needs and well-being of the citizens of Amarillo.”
In a statement, Amarillo Matters declined any additional comment until the period for filing for the election closes. The last day for filing is Feb. 17.
According to a recently filed campaign finance report, Amarillo Matters began soliciting donations about six months ago and raised more than $150,000 between July 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2016.
In the same time period, the group spent $28,739, which according to its finance report largely went to legal fees and campaign services from KAP Strategies of Austin.
