Our journey for setting the future direction of Canyon ISD began in January 2017. The strategic planning process titled Vision 2020 was launched by our board of trustees and district leaders. Along with a new mission statement and a new brand for CISD, we sought to expand and improve opportunities for our students and forged a new vision which draws the mindset for our staff and our community, “Empowering Lifelong Success.” From this vision, five key areas were identified as focal points to advance CISD to a higher level. The key areas are staffing/human resources, student success, growth/facilities, technology and community partnerships.
Parents, community members, business representatives and staff participated on the action teams which met multiple times last spring. Our Vision 2020 plan represents the voice of our school community in expressing an ambitious vision for Canyon ISD. The plan is surrounded with pride, commitment and determination in fulfilling the opportunities for every student to reach his or her highest aspirations. The Canyon ISD Board of Trustees approved the final Vision 2020 Strategic Plan on June 12. We are fortunate to be part of a community who works collaboratively to hold in high regard, the needs of our children.
As part of Vision 2020 technology piece, every high school student will have a Chromebook checked out to them this year that will serve as their learning resource. Students will also produce and submit assignments through Google tools. This technology access for each student represents one part of CISD’s iConnect initiative. Randall High School and Canyon High School libraries have both been renovated this summer to incorporate a technology iConnect service point, where students are the technicians to keep Chromebooks running. The district has partnered with Dell to provide training for students who work in iConnect services.
Growth and facilities was another key area in our Vision 2020 plan. The committee looked at the increasing enrollment projections. For this year we are projecting another record enrollment near 10,000 students. We are excited about the prospect of designing a master plan for facilities through this fall. Look for updates through the fall as the district engages the voice of the community in considering priorities for the master plan. Currently, CISD is building Pinnacle Intermediate School. This fifth- and sixth-grade campus will open its doors in August 2018. Construction of the new facility is on schedule will be completed in spring 2018. CISD plans to select the new principal in January.
Canyon ISD principals and district administrators have created new opportunities for the coming school year, including elementary UIL academic competition, high school manufacturing academy, districtwide soft skills training for students, Senior College Day in the fall and Senior Interview Week in the spring. These additions for 2017-18 expand the opportunities for our students. An advisory council is planned to involve more partners in the manufacturing industry. CISD is also looking to establish future academies for students in other high-demand areas of the job market.
Through visits with area companies, district staff are aligning student skillsets to the workforce needs and expectations of local employers.
