Amarillo police receive TxDOT grant to increase patrols for spring break

The Amarillo Police Department has received additional funds from the Texas Department of Transportation to increase patrols during spring break in hopes of combatting drunken driving, according to an APD news release.

The Amarillo PD received a comprehensive Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant from TxDOT to pay for extra patrol officers to concentrate their enforcement efforts on impaired drivers, speeding violators and seatbelt/child restraint violators, the release stated.

TxDOT’s campaign is called “Plan While You Can” and runs from 5 p.m. Friday until 11:59 p.m. March 18. The campaign’s goal is “to decrease crashes and save lives by urging drivers to plan a sober ride as part of their spring break festivities,” the APD stated.

During last year’s spring break in Texas, there were 410 crashes involving young drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol. Those crashes killed 20 people and seriously injured another 48, according to the APD.
