Police arrested a 30-year-old man in the early hours of the new year after he allegedly fired a gun in a south Amarillo neighborhood, with at least one bullet penetrating the bedroom wall of a home there.

Guadalupe Cain Deleon was arrested after police responded to a shots fired call about 3 a.m. Monday in the 4400 block of South Travis Street.

Police traced the bullet to the backyard of a home in the 4400 block of South Parker Street, where Deleon had shot into a barrel, which had a fire in it, a news release states.

He fired the shots “possibly in an attempt to ventilate the burning barrel,” the news release states.

Officers found a handgun in a grill in the backyard of the home.

Deleon was booked into Randall County jail and is charged with deadly conduct by discharging a firearm.

He was initially charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, but the charge was dismissed, jail records show.
