Amarillo police on Wednesday identified the man killed while crossing Southwest Ninth Avenue on Tuesday morning near the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center.

The Amarillo Police Department said Ricky Ray Graves, 60, was found dead at the scene at Quail Creek Drive and Southwest Ninth Avenue. Justice of the Peace Richard Herman ordered an autopsy on Graves, according to APD.

Officers were dispatched to the accident at 6:46 a.m. and learned that Graves did not use a crosswalk while traversing Ninth Avenue in the dark. Police have said he was trying to get from the north side of the street to the south.

A vehicle was eastbound on Ninth and did not see Graves in the street. Graves was struck by the vehicle and died of injuries sustained there, police said.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured. No charges have been filed in the incident, which is being investigated by APD’ Traffic Follow Up Unit.
