Texas DPS: Dimmitt man dies after tractor-trailer side swipes car

A Dimmitt man died after a two-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning in Hartley County.

The crash was reported about 2:36 a.m. on U.S. Highway 385 about 1.5 miles south of Hartley, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Investigators think Stanley Smith, 78, of Dimmit, was driving a 2005 Saturn Ion south on the highway when a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven northbound by 40-year-old Keldrick Chappell of Dallas crossed into the southbound lane. The tractor-trailer side-swiped the Saturn, causing extensive damage to the driver’s side.

Smith was taken to a hospital in Dalhart, where he was later pronounced dead.

Chappell was not injured. Both men were wearing seat belts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but investigators think no other vehicles were involved. Snow was reported during the crash, but road conditions were dry, according to the DPS.
