Lahnert: My 2 cents

Thumbs Up

How ‘bout that Texas Panhandle? In my umpteen years (yikes it’s 35) of covering high school football I can’t remember another year quite like this one as far as teams reaching deep in then playoffs. We have nine Texas Panhandle teams alive as we reach the state quarterfinals in 11-man and state semifinals in Six-man. This means we are guaranteed five teams from the Texas Panhandle reaching the state semis in 2017. I tip my cap to the nine still alive: Class 4A - Bushland. Class 3A - Canadian, Childress. Class 2A - Clarendon, Panhandle, Stratford and Wellington. Six-Man - Valley and Happy.

Seth Parr: In case you missed it, which I doubt, the former Caprock High coach now at Lubbock Coronado saw his Mustangs hang an eye-opening 80 points on Colleyville Heritage in a Class 5A third round game last week. Eighty? The man coach offense.

Heisman: My vote is on the Heisman as ballot number 521. With all do respect I abide by the clause I agreed to have not telling who I voted for until the Heisman is awarded Saturday night. Hint, some will like it, some won’t.

Stratford impressed with AISD: This from a Stratford coach after his teams’ playoff game in Dick Bivins Stadium last week: “If you find it appropriate I think it would be nice to show our appreciation to the ground/locker room crew at Dick Bivins Stadium. Those guys are the nicest, most cordial and helpful guys you could ask for. They make the experience a very pleasant and memorable one!” I found appropriate, coach. And thanks for the heads up. From a media standpoint, I agree with you.

Thumbs Down

Mike Tomlin: The Steelers head coach was quoted how tough it was late Monday night to fly back to Pittsburgh from Cincinnati and leaving injured linebacker Ryan Shazier in the hospital. Tough? Don’t feed me tough. NFL teams have what like 20 assistant coaches and trainers along for every game. If Tomlin truly wanted to he could have stayed back in Cincy with his player who was taken from the playing field to the hospital. What a joke of a comment by Tomlin. What disrespect. Next time save the lame excuse. In this there is no excuse.
