Coffer and Paulsell rally past Kelting’s to claim 66th Budweiser Partnership

Dylan Coffer and Will Paulsell of Borger rallied from a seven-down deficit after nine holes Sunday to defeat 2016 champions Kyle and Derick Kelting 5&4 to claim the 66th Budweiser Partnership at the Ross Rogers Mustang layout.

While the Keltings got off to a quick start to lead early it was the Borger duo that finished much stronger over the final 25 holes of the 36-hole finale of this low-ball, low-total format event that offers two points per hole.

When the end came at the par 5 16th hole of the afternoon session, it concluded a match that began at 8:30 a.m. and ended nearly 11 1/2 hours later at 8 p.m. following a nearly 2-hour rain delay when heavy rains inundated the golf course.

In winning this event, Coffer and Paulsell became the third all-Borger team to do so in the 66 years it has been held. The other two Borger teams that won it were Jack Coffey and Jim Haren in 1968 and Bobby Barber and Michael Casey in 2006.

The win also qualified Coffer and Paulsell for this year’s Coors Tournament of Champions in mid-August. They increased the field for that event to eight as they qualified for the second straight year, after winning last summer’s Coors Partnership at Comanche Trail.

In building their seven-up lead after nine holes, the Kelting team combined to shoot 5-under 67, including concessions, over that span while Coffer and Paulsell shot 1-over 73.

”After nine holes we basically told ourselves that we were not out of it, with so many holes to play,” said Coffer. ”We knew that if we could somehow cut that deficit to 4-down after the next nine holes we might have a good chance. The fact that we cut it to just 2-down was a real bonus.”

Coffer and Paulsell finally squared the match at No. 3 in the afternoon session and when they each birdied the next hole had their first lead of the day at 2-up.

The teams reached No. 7 when heavy rain interrupted play for nearly two hours, and at that point the Keltings had regained a 1-up advantage. Following the restart of play, Kyle Kelting ran in a 15-foot birdie putt to put them 3-up.

Coffer, however, drained a birdie putt from about 40-feet at No. 9 to get his team within a point, and they never lost another point the rest of the match.

When it ended, Coffer was 7-under including the concessions for the afternoon session while Paulsell was 2-under. Over that same span the Keltings were a combined 1-over, and that margin eventually spelled the difference in a match that seemed to ebb and flow much of the way.
