Bulls set to host Shreveport to close four game homestand

The Amarillo Bulls have a chance to build momentum with an important two game set Friday and Saturday against the North American Hockey League South Division leading Shreveport Mudbugs at the Amarillo Cal Farley Coliseum Civic Center Complex.

Shreveport’s 38 points and 17-4-2-2 record gives the Mudbugs an 11-point lead ahead of third place Amarillo (11-8-3-2, 27 points) entering the weekend.

A pair of wins for the Bulls would be crucial. The Bulls square off with Mudbugs again next weekend for a pair of road games.

“We need to buy in to making (Shreveport) play our brand of hockey,” Bulls coach Rocky Russo said. “We want to play physical Amarillo Bulls hockey and make them adapt of to us, and I think we’ll have success.”

The Bulls are coming off a 5-0 win over Topeka on Sunday that put Amarillo in a tie for third with Odessa (12-10-2-1, 27 points). In Saturday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Roadrunners, the Bulls delivered 71 hits, but ended up delivering 97 in Sunday’s win.

“I think the guys have gained confidence knowing that they can play a physical style of hockey,” Amarillo head coach Rocky Russo said. “That’s the swagger that we had back in the day and that’s something that we’ve been trying to instill since August.”

Jon Russell leads Amarillo offensively scoring 18 goals this far this season. Amarillo’s starting goalie Jason Grande has a record of 9-6-1-1 and a 2.37 goals against average.

It was Alexei Masanko who picked up with the shutout win on Sunday after saving all 22 shots against, improving to 1-1-1-1 in six games played this season.
