100 points not enough No. 8 West Texas falls to No. 13 UTPB, 106-100

West Texas A&M’s bid to remain undefeated against its toughest opponent to date fell short Tuesday night thanks to a first-half struggle.

No. 8-ranked West Texas A&M shot 1-fo-16 from 3-point range in the first half falling behind by 20 points and never fully recovered against No. 13-ranked University of Texas Permian-Basin.

The Buffs did makes things interesting in the final eight minutes, but the first-half shooting struggle led to a 106-100 defeat to UTPB in men’s Lone Star Conference action before a standing-room-only crowd for 422 at the UTPB Gym n Odessa.

The loss was the first on the season for the Buffs, now 8-1 overall and 2-1 in LSC place. Tuesday’s game was third LSC road game in six days for the Buffs who came out of the trip 2-1.

Meanwhile, UTPB is serious about defending its LSC crown from last year moving to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the LSC.

“That was a great atmosphere for our guys to be a part of,” said WT head coach Tom Brown. “I thought we were careless with the basketball in the first half and we forced a couple of shots. When you run up against a team with a lot of seniors (nine) and juniors you can’t do that.”

West Texas trailed by as many as 26 points in the second half, but did show some moxie whittling the UTPB lead to single digits with 1:34 remaining on WT guard David Chavlovich’s layup.

Chavlovich, the leading scorer in the LSC averaging 22.5 points per game, finished with 30 points leading the WT scoring.

Ryan Quaid also continued his strong start to the LSC season as the LSC’s leading rebounder finished with a double-double grabbing 11 boards and scoring 21 points.

WT finished 12-of-40 from 3-point range.

UTPB’s 1-2 punch of senior guards James McPherson and Daeshon Francis combined for 56 points, while Sammy Allen out up a monster game in his 24 minutes grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds and scoring 23 points.

The Buffs return to action Saturday hosting Lubbock Christian in a Division II regional game at 7 p.m. at the First United Bank Center.
