West Texas A&M Buffs set to battle struggling opponent

West Texas A&M is hoping to get an early start on ringing in the New Year with a home win today.

The No. 11-ranked Buffs will play their first game since the Christmas break at 2 p.m. today in the First United Bank Center hosting NAIA’s Northern New Mexico Eagles.

West Texas has been a season-long roll bringing an 11-1 record into this meeting and hasn’t lost at home stretching its FUBC win streak to 26 games dating back to the 2015-16 season.

Northern New Mexico has struggled bringing in a 4-10 record, however, back on Oct. 21 defeated the Buffs 91-86 in an exhibition game in Espanola, N.M.

West Texas fourth-year coach Tom Brown and his Buffs last played Dec. 19, dumping Rollins 88-60 in a neutral site game in Las Vegas, Nev.

Brown said the Buffs players returned to Canyon for their first practice on Wednesday “and things went well. They returned ready to work and looked like they had enjoyed a few Christmas cookies which is to be expected.”

Brown said there is absolutely no thought of revenge against Northern New Mexico in this game steaming from the October exhibition game, but of course, we want to get after it and get a win. We want to give our fans a good showing and get guys some minutes with the return of Lone Star Conference play just a few days away.”

This game appears ready to be played at a fast pace with Northern NM scoring 85 or more points six times this year, while the Buffs rank 13th in Division II scoring averaging 90. 4 points an outing.

West Texas is led by the all-time leading scorer in WT history senior guard David Chavlovich. Chavlovich surpassed the 2,000-point scoring mark earlier this month and averages 21.5 points per game.

WT has a pair of players joining Chavlovich in double figures in senior guard Jordan Evans (17.9 ppg) and junior forward Ryan Quaid (15.9). Quaid is having a breakout season averaging a double-double in the Buffs’ opening 12 games adding 10.8 rebounds a game.

Northern NM guard Bryce Simmons averages 15.8 points a game leading all Eagles starters in scoring.

“This is an NAIA team so win or lose it’s not going to help or hurt us in the Division II rankings,” Brown said. “But like I said we want to get after it. This is a great group of guys who play for each other.”

BUFF STUFF: Senior guard Tommy Gove is back in Minnesota and will have surgery this week to repair the anterior cruciate ligament he tore earlier this month. Gove is in good hands as he said the doctor who performed knee surgery on NFL running back Adrian Peterson will do his surgery. … WT coach Tom Brown won his 75th game with the Buffs in the 88-60 win over Rollins on Dec. 19 in Las Vegas. Brown is 75-32 (.701) during his time at WT. … WT returns to LSC action Thursday hosting Midwestern State at 7:30 p,m. in the FUBC.
