The No. 14 West Texas A&M baseball team completed a series sweep Sunday afternoon, rolling over Tarleton State 14-4 at Wilder Park, invoking the 10-run mercy rule in seven innings.
It was the third straight game WT (15-2) posted at least 14 runs.
The Buffs never trailed Tarleton (9-8) in the series finale. They scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead, but Tarleton rallied with three in the top of the fourth to cut it to 4-3.
The Cowboys got no closer, though, as in the bottomn of the inning, WT senior Nick Canas belted a two-run home run to right for a 6-3 lead and his second round-tripper of the season. In the bottom of the fifth, WT junior Christian Loya belted his third home run of the season – a two run shot for a 9-3 lead that put the game on ice.
In the botton of the sixth, WT senior Brandon Marrero singled off the wall to drive home two for a 12-3 lead.
A double from Bodie Bryan began the bottom of the eighth and Jimmy Cubillos singled up the middle for a 13-4 lead. An RBI single by Loya plated the 14th run of the game for the run-rule.
Loya, Bryan and Canas each had two hits for the Buffs, while Loya had a game-high four RBIsn.
Darin Cook went six innings as he improved to 3-1 on the year, allowing four hits, three earned runs, walked two and fanned a season-high 10.
The Buffs head to Texas A&M Kingsville next week for a four game non-conference series, before returning home to host Angelo State in a non-conference series Mar. 16-18 at Wilder Park.
