West Texas A&M’s Gach Gach and David Chavlovich combined to go 4-of-4 on free throws over the final 17 seconds providing the key points in the Buffs’ 65-62 win over Southern Indiana Monday afternoon at the Doolittle Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The No. 12 Buffs moved to 10-1 on the season, while Southern Indiana dropped to 8-3.

West Texas led by 11 points with 6:31 remaining but saw Southern Indiana cut the lead to one twice in the final 30 seconds.

The first time Southern Indiana crawled within one arrived with 29 seconds remaining on a Dayjar Dickson layup cutting the WT lead to 61-60.

Chavlovich, who scored 15 points but struggled from the field going 4-of-16, was immediately fouled and made Southern Indian pay for the strategy extending the Buffs lead to three by canning two free throws with 17 seconds,

Southern Indiana quickly answered when guard Alex Stein made a jumper with 12 seconds remaining moving to within of WT at 63-62.

This time Southern Indiana fouled WT’s Gach Gach with six seconds to play. Gach, who had missed all five of his field goal attempts, canned both free throws for a 65-62 lead.

Stein had a chance to send the game into overtime with a 3 -pointer but his shot missed with two seconds remaining and WT junior Ryan Quaid pulled down the rebound securing the hard-fought win.

Quaid was sensational for the Buffs canning 9-of-13 field goal attempts for a team-high 18 points and completing the double-double with 11 rebounds.

Joining Quaid and Chavlovich in double figures for WT was Jordan Evans with 14. Evans also grabbed six rebounds helping WT win the rebounding margin 41-34 over Southern Indiana. The Buffs struggled from beyond the 3-point arc going 4-of-16, but made up for the misses at the free throw line shooting 90 percent at 9-of-10.

Southern Indiana was led by Stein’s game-high 19 points, while guard Nate Hansen added 13.
