Buffs fend off ASU behind Quaid’s 21 points, 21 boards

West Texas 81, Angelo State 77

Records: West Texas A&M improves to 15-1 overall, 5-1 in the Lone Star Conference. Angelo State falls to 11-4, 3-3.

Impact: West Texas A&M junior Ryan Quaid scores 21 points and grabs a career-high 21 rebounds.

No. 8-ranked West Texas A&M received a monster double-double from Ryan Quaid and used a 10-3 run over the final two minutes escaping the Junell Center with a hard-fought 81-77 win over Angelo State Thursday night in Lone Star Conference action.

The Buffs led by 15 points in the first half, but trailed with 84 seconds remaining before closing out the road win.

“You aren’t going into any venue and just walk out with a win in the Lone Star Conference,” said WT head coach Tom Brown. “We didn’t have our best game to be honest, but give Angelo State credit. We were a little bit lucky to win this one but we will take it.”

WT senior guard David Chavlovich, who struggled shooting for much of the game, found his touch at the right time scoring eight of the Buffs final 10 points finishing with 18 points.

Quaid, a junior, roughed up Angelo State for 21 points and a career-high 21 rebounds giving WT the lead for good with 70 seconds remaining on an inside basket.

Chavlovich followed Quaid’s basket with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later putting the Buffs ahead 79-75. Before making the 3-pointer Chavlovich, the all-time leading scorer in WT history, was 0-of-11 from 3-point range against Angelo State.

“I didn’t play well,” Chavlovich said. “It’s not a shock to anybody. It is what it is. I knew I had to stay involved to help us win the game. And it’s wins that matter not points.”

Angelo State managed one basket by James Kirksey over the final 52 seconds.

“David’s kind of John Wayne with true grit,” Brown said. “You have to trust in your guys and we do.”

WT started strong holding a 15-point lead in the first half as senior guard Jordan Evans joined Quaid in leading the scoring way for the Buffs.

But Evans fouled out with 13:54 remaining in the game having scored 17 points.

Quaid was strong throughout making 8-of-15 field goal attempts, 5-of-6 free throws and his incredible 21 rebounds propelled WT to a 55-42 rebounding edge.

Quaid was asked after the game if he liked the sound of 21 and 21.

“I like the sound of a win better,” Quaid said. “It was a battle. I’m proud of our guys for getting those rebounds late. When Jordan fouled out it was important for them to step up at that point.”

Angelo State was led Kirksey’s 17 points, Kiair Crouch added 14, while Daron Mims scored 12.

“We take confidence,” Quaid said of the win. “Just confidence. We are going to take every teams best shot. So that’s really big for us to get this win.”

BUFF STUFF: West Texas returns to action Saturday visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville. … Brown said the Buffs suited 10 players for the game due to injuries and the flu bug.
